My mom screeched down the hallway as I ran away from the bathroom. As a seven-year-old, I despised taking showers. Most of my reasons for hating them were trivial, but I just knew that if I heard the word “shower” it was time for me to leave. Yet even though hearing the term “shower” brought me so much fear back then, it has now become my favorite word.
As a young adult, “shower” is a word that brings me a sense of relaxation. I use my time while showering to think critically about myself and the goals that I want to accomplish. It essentially becomes a time for me to step out of the world and plan what I need to get done. From mapping out how to study to just visualizing taking out the trash, thinking in the shower helps me organize my day and feel relieved.
The most interesting thing about the word to me is the stark contrast between how I viewed it as a kid and as a young adult. As a kid, a “shower” was something that I viewed as a waste of time. Currently, my view on it has completely changed as it's now an irreplaceable part of my daily schedule. Even though it took a couple of years, I matured to the point where I didn’t need to be yelled at to go take a shower. “Shower” is essentially a word that symbolizes my capacity to develop as a person.
