Perseverance

The week was winding down to Friday- the day I would finally take part in my first winter track meet. My plan was simple: make it to the bus on time, get to the meet on time, listen for my school to be called, and then finish the race. This meet was especially important to me because I had just barely made the team this year, and it was my opportunity to show that I truly belonged on the team.

As the day eventually came, however, my fool-proof plan was in shambles. The bus was set to pick us up after school ended, but while I was in my gym class, I missed an important update from the coach. The bus was coming in the middle of our last period. Since I didn’t see the message, I missed the bus and my entire plan was ruined.

This was the moment I came to realize that plans fall through. No matter how much you try, something might happen to throw it off the rails. Whether it was something small like planning on relaxing while watching T.V or planning a big vacation, plans fall through. However, even if this happens, that doesn’t mean you should give up. The truest thing I know is that plans don’t always work out, but your ability to overcome the obstacle that threw it off is what defines you.

When I missed the bus, I was angry, but I didn’t keep sulking. The meet was about an hour away, and the bus had a 30-minute head start. If I could just get my mom to drive me there, I could still get a chance to race. I speedily asked my mom, and we eventually went on to drive there. I was able to complete the meet.
