From the moment we said our first word to now writing our college theses, our education has played an important role in our development. Students don’t notice it, but school truly shapes who they are. Whether it’s learning how to read or doing integrals in calculus, the education system has been the foundation for it all. Though most students despise going to school and having to wake up to their 6 o’clock alarms, they know deep down that gaining an education is important to them. The main purpose of 13 years of rushed breakfasts and all-nighters is to gain an experience, one that is filled with unforgettable memories and unbelievable amounts of knowledge.
Most don’t believe that you learn much in 13 years of school, however school teaches you more than just what’s written on a syllabus. These kids make most of their memories in their years of schooling: ones that make a person who they really are. They make their first friends, and they learn the most valuable lessons. Sure, there can be boring lectures about how Constantinople came to be or why there are letters in math, but your education digs much deeper than that. If you ask anyone, they’ll say the purpose of education is to learn information for 7 hours a day. The lessons you learn while in school are unforgettable. Your future is paved with the education system, and it allows for you to transform into the person you’ve always wanted to be. Studies show that without any connections to the knowledge one learns on a daily basis, around 86% of it is forgotten. The point is to have a connection to what you learn, and that’s what schooling brings you.
More goes into your schooling than just connections, it’s an experience that you won’t get from anything else. School allows you to make lifelong friends and establish endless connections. I met one of my best friends a couple of years ago. The only reason I met her was because of school. She helped me through school and through life because I met her in English class. If I hadn’t been in that English class, then I wouldn’t have one of the strongest friendships I’ve had in my life. Most of the friends I have these days are entirely from school. I’ve also learned the valuable lesson of not throwing my future away because of one small failure. School has taught me that if I give up after one small setback, I won’t have a future and all that I’ve worked for has gone to waste. There’s more to school than just useless knowledge about integrals. School may just seem like a waste of time, but it’s beneficial in more ways than one.
The point of an education system is to educate, not only on your core subjects, but also on life. It’s meant to teach you invaluable lessons that you carry with you and provide you with a path to your future. Whether you go to college or go straight to a career, school helps build that path for you. It gives you opportunities to become the person you want to be. The education system is beyond what a person realizes it is. It is an experience. After all, that’s why they say, “you learn something new each day”.
