POV: You're a lawmaker
On February 14th, 2018, a man opened fire in a high school injuring 17 and taking the lives of 17 others. You did nothing. This summer, 20 people were killed, 20 innocent people were killed in the timespan of 2 days. You did nothing. Most of them were just trying to enjoy their summer with their family at the mall not knowing that they would never return home. How many more? How many more people need to die in order for change? But you know this information, but what you do not know is that each day the problem is becoming more and more severe. Each day, more and more guns are being purchased and used by the wrong people. This summer, it was 20 people, tomorrow it can be 30 or 40 people. Is this the world we live in? The world where simple actions like going to school or buying groceries could be fatal. A world where parents have to hug their kids tighter everyday because they are not sure if their children will return from school unharmed. Is this the world you have created? You always talk about what you would do to make the future a bright place, but what value does the future have if the present is how it is. No amount of condolences or prayers could fill the void this gun crisis has brought to them. Yes. Crisis is the word that should be used to explain our situation. First, you blamed the gun epidemic on violent video games and then on mental health, and now you are saying that background checks will be put into place?! We are in a state of war with guns, and so far, the guns are winning. Changes need to be made, big changes need to be made. No one should be scared, no one. I leave you with a quote from the late John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Lawmakers like yourself, you can change this country for the better.
